Synthetic emotions and consciousness: exploring architectural boundaries
This paper proposes a modular, biologically motivated control architecture that implements synthetic emotion-like behaviors while adhering to four specific constraints designed to exclude features associated with access-like consciousness, thereby offering a methodological template for engineering safe AI systems and auditing their risk of instantiating consciousness.
