Terms and Conditions

Last updated: 30 April 2026

These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the website gist.science and any related services, newsletters, paid digests, APIs, and applications (together, the "Service"). The Service is operated by:

Bition B.V. ("Gist.Science", "we", "us", "our")
Verdunplein 17, 5627 SZ Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Chamber of Commerce (KvK): 95743731
VAT (BTW-ID): NL867271966B01
Email: mail@gist.science

By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

Gist.Science generates AI-assisted plain-language and technical summaries ("Gists") of preprints and research articles published on arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, and similar open-access repositories. We offer:

  • Free access to the public website, including individual paper pages, search, landmark and reviewed sections, and an English-language weekly newsletter.
  • Digest — a paid subscription that delivers personalised daily or weekly email digests of papers matching your chosen categories and keywords, in your chosen language.

We may add, remove or change features at any time. Where a change materially reduces a paid feature you are currently paying for, we will give you reasonable advance notice and, where appropriate, a pro-rata refund.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country, if higher) to use the Service. By using the Service you represent that you meet this requirement and that you are legally capable of entering into a binding contract.

3. Accounts

Some features (including the Digest) require an account. You agree to:

  • provide accurate and current information when creating your account;
  • keep your login credentials confidential; and
  • notify us promptly at mail@gist.science if you suspect unauthorised access to your account.

You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account. We may suspend or terminate accounts that we reasonably believe are being used in breach of these Terms.

4. Subscriptions, billing and trials

4.1 Plans and prices

Current Digest pricing is shown on the pricing page. Prices are exclusive of VAT or sales tax where applicable; the appropriate tax will be added at checkout based on your billing location.

4.2 Free trial

We currently offer a 10-day free trial of the Digest. You will not be charged during the trial period. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, your subscription will automatically convert to a paid subscription at the then-current price.

4.3 Recurring billing

Paid subscriptions renew automatically each billing period (monthly unless stated otherwise) until cancelled. By starting a subscription you authorise us, through our payment processor Stripe, to charge your payment method on each renewal date.

4.4 Cancellation

You may cancel at any time from your account page via the Stripe customer portal ("Manage billing"). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep access until that date and are not charged again. We do not provide pro-rata refunds for partial periods except where required by law (see Section 4.5).

4.5 EU/UK right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer resident in the EU or UK, you have a statutory right to withdraw from a distance contract within 14 days of entering into it. By starting your subscription and beginning to receive digital content (e.g. receiving your first digest email) before the 14-day period ends, you expressly request immediate performance and acknowledge that you lose the right of withdrawal once performance has begun. To exercise the right of withdrawal where it still applies, email mail@gist.science before you receive any digital content.

4.6 Price changes

We may change subscription prices. We will give existing subscribers at least 30 days' notice by email before a price change takes effect. If you do not accept the new price, you may cancel before it applies.

4.7 Failed payments

If a renewal payment fails, we may retry, downgrade your account to the free tier, or suspend access until payment is received.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the Service in violation of any law or third-party right;
  • scrape, crawl, or systematically extract content beyond what is allowed by our robots.txt, our public RSS feed, or any documented API, or in volumes that place an unreasonable load on the Service;
  • circumvent paywalls, rate limits, or access controls, or share paid content in a way designed to bypass payment;
  • resell, sublicense or redistribute the Service or its content as a substitute for it;
  • use the Service to train or fine-tune machine-learning models without our prior written permission;
  • attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or interfere with the Service's infrastructure, or probe it for vulnerabilities outside a coordinated disclosure agreed with us;
  • upload or transmit malware, or use the Service to harass, defame, or harm others.

We may suspend or terminate access for material or repeated breaches.

6. Intellectual property

6.1 Our content

The Service, including the Gists we generate, the website design, code, logos, and the compilation and arrangement of content, is owned by or licensed to Bition B.V. and is protected by copyright and other laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the Service for your personal, non-commercial research and reading.

6.2 Source papers

The underlying research papers we summarise are made available by their authors through arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, or similar repositories under the licences chosen by the authors. We do not own those papers. When you click through to a paper, your use of it is governed by the licence the authors selected (e.g. arXiv's perpetual non-exclusive licence, a Creative Commons licence, or "All rights reserved").

6.3 Quoting and citing Gists

You may quote short excerpts of our Gists for non-commercial review, news reporting, teaching and research, provided you attribute Gist.Science and link back to the original page. Larger reproductions, commercial republication, or systematic redistribution require our prior written permission.

6.4 Author take-down requests

If you are the author of a paper and would like its Gist removed or corrected, email mail@gist.science with a link to the paper and we will respond promptly.

7. AI-generated content and accuracy

Gists are produced by automated AI systems based on the full text of the source paper. Despite our best efforts, AI-generated summaries can contain inaccuracies, omissions, oversimplifications, or hallucinated details. Specifically:

  • A Gist is not a substitute for reading the original paper, peer review, professional advice, or independent verification.
  • Nothing on the Service is medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. If a paper covers a medical, clinical, or safety-critical topic, consult a qualified professional before acting on it.
  • Translations into non-English languages are generated natively by the same AI system and may differ in nuance from the source paper.

You are responsible for verifying anything material before relying on it.

8. Newsletters and emails

If you subscribe to the free newsletter or the paid Digest, you consent to receive transactional and content emails from us at the address you provide. You can unsubscribe from marketing or content emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in the footer of any email or by emailing mail@gist.science. We may still send essential service emails (such as billing notices) while you have an active account or paid subscription.

9. Third-party services and links

The Service relies on third-party providers, including but not limited to Stripe (payments), Resend (email delivery), Cloudflare (security and CDN), Google AdSense (advertising on free pages for non-authenticated visitors), and the open-access repositories that publish the source papers. These third parties operate under their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the content, availability, or practices of websites we link to.

10. Service availability

We try to keep the Service available and reliable, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free, or secure access. We may take the Service offline for maintenance, updates, or reasons outside our control without prior notice.

11. Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law (including, for EU/UK consumers, statutory consumer rights).

12. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with the Service.
  • Our total aggregate liability arising out of or in connection with the Service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in that 12-month period, or (b) EUR 100.
  • Nothing in this Section limits our liability for fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.

13. Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Bition B.V. and its directors, employees, and contractors from any claim, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your breach of these Terms or your unlawful use of the Service.

14. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time and cancel any paid subscription as described in Section 4.4. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service:

  • for material or repeated breach of these Terms;
  • if we are required to do so by law; or
  • if continued provision becomes commercially or technically unreasonable, in which case we will give you reasonable notice and pro-rata refund any pre-paid unused subscription fees.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including IP, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law) will survive.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the current version. For material changes that affect paid subscribers, we will give at least 30 days' notice by email or via a notice in the Service. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

16. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. The competent courts of Oost-Brabant (s-Hertogenbosch), the Netherlands have exclusive jurisdiction, except that:

  • if you are a consumer resident in the EU or UK, you may also bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence and benefit from any mandatory consumer protections of that country; and
  • consumers in the EU may also use the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.

17. Miscellaneous

  • Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service.
  • Severability. If any provision is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force.
  • No waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of our right to do so later.
  • Assignment. You may not assign these Terms without our consent. We may assign them to an affiliate or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

18. Contact

Questions or notices about these Terms: mail@gist.science.
