Technoeconomic Screening and Decision Framework for Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands Using Reclaimed Water in Riyadh Parks
This study presents a techno-economic decision-making framework demonstrating that park-integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands can serve as a selective and cost-effective decentralized advanced treatment solution for reclaimed water irrigation in Riyadh, provided that specific source water quality, land availability, and salinity constraints are met. The economic comparison is based on the levelized incremental cost of the conventional water-supply pathway, rather than simply the proximity to existing pipelines. The reference capacity of 500 m³/day is approximately one-fifth of a standard Olympic swimming pool. Furthermore, the framework clarifies that final filtration, disinfection, and regulatory compliance verification remain necessary, with additional nutrient-removal processes required under certain source-water conditions.
