Absence of Quadratic-Order Sensitivity to Small Neutrino Mass Splittings in Disappearance Measurements
This paper demonstrates that in neutrino disappearance experiments using binned energy spectra, small mass-squared splittings become unidentifiable at quadratic order because the resulting smooth spectral distortions are absorbed by profiled nuisance parameters representing systematic uncertainties, thereby suppressing sensitivity until higher-order oscillation effects or constrained systematic models become relevant.
