Technoeconomic Screening and Decision Framework for Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands Using Reclaimed Water in Riyadh Parks
This study presents a techno-economic decision-making framework demonstrating that park-integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands can serve as a selective and cost-effective decentralized advanced treatment unit for reclaimed water irrigation in Riyadh, provided that constraints regarding specific source water quality, land availability, and salinity are met. The reference capacity of 500 m³/day is approximately one-fifth of a standard Olympic-size swimming pool. It should be noted that additional nutrient-removal processes are required under certain source-water conditions, and final filtration, disinfection, and regulatory compliance verification remain necessary. Furthermore, the economic comparison is based on the levelized incremental cost of the conventional water-supply pathway, rather than simply the proximity of an existing pipeline.
