This cradle-to-farm-gate life cycle assessment in arid Upper Egypt demonstrates that substituting mineral fertilizer with compost, particularly under deficit irrigation, significantly reduces the carbon and water footprints of wheat and faba bean by increasing yields and lowering emissions, while highlighting that decarbonizing diesel-powered irrigation remains a critical priority for sustainable agriculture in the region.
