This study demonstrates that analyzing soil volatile organic compound fingerprint breadth using portable gas chromatography serves as an effective screening tool for prioritizing illegal dumping sites in Jackson, Mississippi, as this metric correlates significantly with toxic-metal contamination levels, particularly arsenic, in ways that visual inspection and traditional metal indices cannot capture.
