Egypt’s protected-area network at the land–sea interface: coastal reserve fragmentation, the 30×30 gap, and Lessepsian bioinvasion (1983–2022)
This study evaluates Egypt's protected-area network from 1983 to 2022, revealing that while the total area has expanded significantly, the system remains highly unequal and fragmented with a coastal sub-network that is underrepresented and vulnerable to Lessepsian bioinvasion, necessitating a strategic shift from mere area accumulation toward improving connectivity, representativeness, and management effectiveness to meet the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework's 30×30 target.
