Based on a 22-year study of 864 trees in India's Western Ghats, this research reveals that tree flowering and fruiting are driven by distinct local climatic pathways (insolation and temperature) rather than rainfall, with their interannual variability jointly governed by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole, particularly during compound events.
