Association Between Maternal Glycemic Status and Urinary Infection Markers During Pregnancy: A Prospective Observational Study
This prospective observational study of 2,017 pregnant women reveals that while gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with higher rates of urinary infection markers, even within the non-diabetic population, elevated fasting plasma glucose levels independently predict increased risks of positive urine cultures, Group B Streptococcus colonization, and asymptomatic bacteriuria, suggesting that glycemic risk should be viewed as a continuous spectrum rather than a categorical threshold.
