Operation of a Modular 3D-Pixelated Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber in a Neutrino Beam

This paper presents the design, commissioning, and initial physics results of the 2x2 Demonstrator, a modular 3D-pixelated liquid argon time-projection chamber prototype for the DUNE Near Detector, which successfully recorded over 30,000 neutrino interactions in a 2024 NuMI beam run.

The Big Picture: A "Test Kitchen" for Neutrinos

Imagine scientists are trying to build a massive, high-tech kitchen to cook up a very specific recipe: understanding the secrets of the universe's most elusive particles, called neutrinos. This big kitchen is called the DUNE Near Detector, and it's being built deep underground at Fermilab in Illinois.

Before they build the full-sized kitchen (which will be huge, holding 17,000 tons of liquid), they needed to test their new, innovative design. So, they built a "test kitchen" called the 2x2 Demonstrator.

This paper is the report card on how that test kitchen performed during its first few days of cooking in 2024. The verdict? It worked beautifully, capturing over 30,000 neutrino interactions and proving that their new design can handle the chaos of a busy beam.

The Ingredients: Liquid Argon and a "Pixelated" Camera

The core of this detector is a giant tank filled with liquid argon. Think of liquid argon as a super-clear, super-cold swimming pool. When a neutrino (a ghost-like particle) swims through this pool, it bumps into an argon atom.

In old detectors, scientists used long wires to catch the sparks left behind by these bumps. But in this new design, the "pool" is lined with pixels, like the millions of tiny dots on a high-definition TV screen.

  • The Analogy: Instead of trying to trace a path with a single wire, imagine the pool is covered in a grid of millions of tiny, self-resetting cameras. When a particle zips through, it leaves a trail of digital footprints on these pixels. This creates a native 3D image of the particle's path instantly, without needing complex math to reconstruct it later.

The Challenge: The "Traffic Jam" Problem

The big problem the scientists were trying to solve is pileup (or a traffic jam).

  • The Scenario: The neutrino beam shoots out in short bursts (spills) that last about 10 microseconds. However, the "cameras" (pixels) take a long time to read the data—about 200 microseconds.
  • The Problem: If 50 neutrinos hit the pool during one 10-microsecond burst, their trails would overlap in the data stream, creating a messy, unreadable blob. It's like trying to read 50 different handwritten letters that were all crumpled into a single ball of paper.

The Solution: The 2x2 Demonstrator is built like a modular house.

  • It is divided into four separate rooms (modules).
  • Each room is further split into two smaller, soundproofed apartments (optically isolated TPCs).
  • The Magic: Because the rooms are separated, if a "traffic jam" happens in Room A, it doesn't spill over into Room B. The detectors can tell exactly which room the particle hit and when, keeping the data clean even when the beam is crowded.

The "Flashlight" System: Timing is Everything

To untangle the mess of overlapping tracks, the detector has a special Light Readout System.

  • The Analogy: Imagine the liquid argon pool glows briefly (like a camera flash) whenever a particle hits it. The 2x2 Demonstrator is lined with special "flashlight traps" (light sensors) that catch this glow.
  • Why it matters: The light travels at the speed of light, while the electrical signal (the pixel data) drifts slowly. The light sensors act as a timestamp. They tell the computer, "Hey, this flash happened at exactly 12:00:01!" This allows the computer to sort the slow-moving pixel data into the correct order, separating the overlapping tracks just like sorting mail by the time it was stamped.

The Test Run: What Actually Happened?

In the summer of 2024, the team turned on the machine and let the NuMI beam (a stream of muon antineutrinos) shoot through it for 4.5 days. Here is what they found:

  1. It Stayed Clean: The liquid argon had to be incredibly pure (free of oxygen and water) so the electrical signals wouldn't get eaten before they reached the cameras. The team managed to keep the "purity" high, with electrons surviving for about 1.25 milliseconds—long enough to make it to the sensors.
  2. It Caught the Ghosts: The detector successfully recorded over 30,000 neutrino interactions. This is the first time a DUNE prototype has ever seen neutrinos.
  3. It Saw the "Traffic": The paper shows pictures (event displays) of the detector catching multiple neutrinos hitting the pool at the exact same time. Because of the modular design, the computer could clearly see that one neutrino hit the top-left room and another hit the bottom-right room, even though they happened simultaneously.
  4. It Caught Background Noise: The detector also saw "rock muons" (particles created when the beam hits the rock above the lab) and cosmic rays (particles from space). It successfully distinguished these from the actual neutrino events.

The "Lessons Learned"

The test kitchen wasn't perfect, but it taught the builders valuable lessons:

  • Leaky Seals: They found a tiny leak in the seal between the modules and the tank. They fixed it by adding a constant top-up of gas, which worked like a "pressure valve."
  • Noise Reduction: Some of the electronic channels were a bit "noisy" (like a radio with static). They learned how to tune them out, and the next version of the detector (the Full Scale Demonstrator) is already using these fixes to be even quieter.
  • Design Tweaks: They realized that while their fancy "resistive field shell" (a special coating to guide the electricity) worked, a slightly different, cheaper design might be better for the final massive detector.

The Conclusion

The 2x2 Demonstrator proved that the new modular, pixelated design works. It showed that even when the neutrino beam is busy and chaotic, the detector can separate the signals, keep the data clean, and take beautiful 3D pictures of particle interactions.

This successful test run gives the scientists the green light to proceed with building the full-scale DUNE Near Detector, which will eventually help unlock the mysteries of why the universe is made of matter rather than antimatter.
