Euclid preparation. Decomposing components of the extragalactic background light using multi-band intensity mapping cross-correlations
This paper presents a joint halo-model framework combining multi-band intensity mapping with cosmic shear and galaxy clustering to successfully decompose the extragalactic background light into its constituent components (IGL, IHL, and EoR), demonstrating that cross-correlations with Euclid significantly reduce parameter uncertainties and improve constraints on intra-halo light and high-redshift star formation compared to intensity mapping alone.

The Cosmic "Static" and the Detective Work of Euclid & SPHEREx
Imagine the universe isn't just a collection of bright stars and galaxies, but also filled with a faint, glowing "fog" of light. This is called the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). It's the leftover glow from every star that has ever lived, scattered across the sky.
However, this fog is a messy mixture. It's like a bowl of soup where you can't tell the carrots from the potatoes because they are all blended together. Astronomers know there are three main ingredients in this soup:
- The "Leftover Stars" (IHL): Stars that have been kicked out of their home galaxies and are now wandering freely in the dark space between galaxies.
- The "Too-Faint Galaxies" (IGL): Tiny, dim galaxies that are too small for our telescopes to see individually, but their collective light adds up.
- The "Ancient Echo" (EoR): Light from the very first stars that formed billions of years ago, during the "Epoch of Reionization."
The Problem: If you just look at the soup (the light) with one telescope, you can't separate the ingredients. They all look like a blurry, static-filled picture.
The Solution: This paper proposes a brilliant detective trick: Cross-Correlation. Instead of just looking at the light, the authors suggest comparing the light map with two other maps:
- The "Gravity Map" (Cosmic Shear): How the universe's invisible skeleton (dark matter) bends light.
- The "Galaxy Map" (Clustering): Where the visible galaxies are actually sitting.
Think of it like this:
- The "Wandering Stars" (IHL) are like stray dogs that follow the invisible fences (dark matter halos). If you see a bend in the gravity map, you know the wandering stars are there too. They are tightly linked.
- The "Too-Faint Galaxies" (IGL) are like a crowd of people. They are near the gravity, but not as tightly glued to it as the stray dogs.
- The "Ancient Echo" (EoR) is like a ghost from a different time. It's so far away that it doesn't care about the local gravity or the current galaxy crowd. It's essentially invisible to the gravity map.
By comparing the "Light Map" with the "Gravity Map," the astronomers can mathematically pull the ingredients apart. If the light moves exactly with the gravity, it's the wandering stars. If it moves a bit differently, it's the faint galaxies. If it doesn't move with the gravity at all, it's the ancient echo.
The Tools: SPHEREx and Euclid
To do this, the paper combines two powerful space missions:
- SPHEREx (The Color Scanner): Imagine a camera that takes a picture of the whole sky but splits every pixel into 100 different colors (from near-infrared to red). It's like having a prism for the entire universe. It sees the "soup" in incredible detail.
- Euclid (The Shape Shifter): This is a mission dedicated to measuring the shapes of billions of galaxies. It acts like a giant ruler, measuring how the universe's gravity is stretching and warping space.
The paper simulates what happens when these two missions work together in specific deep fields (patches of sky that are looked at very closely).
The Results: A Clearer Picture
The authors ran a massive computer simulation (a "mock survey") to see if this idea works. Here is what they found, translated into simple terms:
- Separating the Soup: When they combined the data, they could separate the "wandering stars" from the "faint galaxies" much better than if they just used the light camera alone. It's like adding a second pair of eyes that sees depth; suddenly, the flat image becomes 3D.
- Finding the Ghosts: Because the ancient light (EoR) doesn't care about the local gravity, the cross-correlation method actually helps hide the local noise and make the ancient signal stand out. It's like turning down the volume on a busy street so you can hear a whisper from a long time ago.
- Better Precision: The uncertainty (the "fuzziness" of the answer) dropped by 10% to 30% for the wandering stars and 20% to 30% for the ancient star formation rates.
- Going Back in Time: This method allows them to measure how fast stars were forming when the universe was only a few hundred million years old (redshift z≈11), pushing our knowledge of the early universe further back than ever before.
The Bottom Line
This paper is a blueprint for the future of astronomy. It shows that by cross-referencing different types of cosmic data (light, gravity, and galaxy positions), we can untangle the messy history of the universe.
Instead of just staring at a blurry picture of the past, we can now use the universe's own gravity as a lens to sort out exactly what is glowing, where it is, and when it happened. It turns a static-filled radio into a clear, high-definition broadcast of cosmic history.
1. Problem Statement
The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) in the optical and near-infrared (0.75–5.0 µm) contains the cumulative radiation from all cosmic sources. However, disentangling its constituent components is a major challenge because they overlap significantly in both angular scales and spectral colors. The primary components include:
- Intra-Halo Light (IHL): Diffuse light from tidally stripped stars within dark matter halos.
- Integrated Galaxy Light (IGL): Light from unresolved faint galaxies below the detection threshold.
- Epoch of Reionization (EoR) Emission: High-redshift (z≳6) emission from Population II/III stars.
- Foregrounds/Noise: Diffuse Galactic Light (DGL), zodiacal light, and shot noise.
The Core Challenge: Auto-power spectra (fluctuations within a single map) are insufficient to cleanly separate these components because they share similar spatial and spectral signatures. The paper aims to solve this by leveraging cross-correlations between intensity maps and independent tracers of large-scale structure (LSS).
2. Methodology
A. Theoretical Framework
The authors developed a joint halo-model framework to model the angular power spectra (Cℓ) and cross-spectra.
- EBL Components:
- IHL: Modeled with a mass- and redshift-dependent luminosity scaling (L∝Mβ(1+z)α). The fraction of halo luminosity (fIHL) is fitted in seven halo mass bins.
- IGL: Derived from an evolving Schechter luminosity function (Helgason et al. 2012) integrated below a masking threshold (mlim=20.5 AB mag).
- EoR: Modeled using Pop II/III stellar emissivities and a binned star-formation efficiency (f∗) across redshift bins.
- Foregrounds: DGL is modeled as a power law (Cℓ∝ℓ−3), and shot noise is calculated based on the masking limit.
- Lensing & Clustering:
- Cosmic Shear: Modeled using the TATT (Tidal Alignment and Tidal Torquing) model to account for Intrinsic Alignments (IA).
- Galaxy Clustering: Modeled via a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) prescription.
- Cross-Correlations: The key innovation is calculating cross-power spectra between EBL bands and:
- Cosmic Shear (γ): IHL correlates strongly with the gravitational potential (shear), while IGL correlates differently based on the luminosity function. EoR (high-z) has negligible overlap with low-z shear kernels.
- Galaxy Clustering (g): Provides additional redshift weighting constraints.
B. Survey Simulations & Data Vector
The study uses mock surveys based on a flat ΛCDM cosmology:
- SPHEREx: Simulates 10 spectral bands (0.75–5.0 µm) over the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) deep fields (~100 deg2) with a masking depth of AB = 20.5.
- Euclid: Simulates weak lensing (shear) and galaxy clustering in 6 photometric redshift bins up to z=2.5, covering the Euclid Deep Fields (EDFN/EDFS) which overlap with SPHEREx.
- Data Vector: Includes 10 EBL auto-spectra, shear/galaxy auto-spectra, and crucially, all EBL × Shear and EBL × Galaxy cross-spectra.
C. Analysis Technique
- MCMC Fitting: A Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach (using
emcee) is used to fit ~50 free parameters (including IHL mass/redshift scaling, IGL amplitudes, EoR star-formation efficiency, IA parameters, and shear calibration). - Scenarios: The authors compare four analysis cases:
- EBL-only (Auto-spectra).
- EBL + Weak Lensing (WL).
- EBL + Galaxy Clustering (GC).
- EBL + WL + GC (Full joint analysis).
3. Key Contributions
- Novel Decomposition Strategy: Demonstrates that cross-correlating intensity maps with cosmic shear and galaxy clustering breaks degeneracies that auto-spectra cannot resolve.
- Physical Separation Mechanism:
- IHL vs. IGL: IHL traces the dark matter halo distribution more directly, resulting in a stronger correlation coefficient with cosmic shear than IGL. This allows for tighter constraints on the IHL fraction.
- EoR Isolation: Because EoR sources are at z>6 and Euclid probes z<2.5, the cross-correlation signal between EoR and Euclid shear is negligible. This lack of correlation acts as a diagnostic to isolate the high-z EoR component from the low-z IHL/IGL components.
- Systematics Mitigation: Cross-correlations naturally suppress foregrounds (DGL, zodiacal light) and instrument noise, as these are uncorrelated with the extragalactic shear field.
4. Results
The joint analysis (SPHEREx × Euclid) successfully recovers all fiducial parameters within 1σ and significantly improves precision compared to EBL-only analyses:
- IHL Constraints:
- Uncertainties on IHL parameters (mass scaling β and redshift evolution α) are reduced by 10–30%.
- The inferred IHL fraction (fIHL) as a function of halo mass is significantly tightened over the range 1011.2−1013.8M⊙, with error reductions of 5–30%.
- EoR Constraints:
- Constraints on the star-formation efficiency (f∗) improve by 20–30%.
- The method extends competitive Star Formation Rate Density (SFRD) constraints to z≈11, a regime difficult to probe with traditional galaxy counts alone.
- Systematics Control:
- The analysis remains robust against variations in DGL amplitude and masking thresholds.
- Marginalizing over shear calibration and IA parameters does not erase the astrophysical gains from cross-correlations.
5. Significance
This paper establishes a robust, systematics-aware pathway for future EBL science. By combining the spectral depth of SPHEREx with the tomographic power of Euclid, the study proves that:
- Component Resolution: It is possible to separate diffuse intra-halo light from unresolved galaxy light and high-redshift reionization sources without relying solely on absolute intensity measurements.
- Early Universe Physics: The technique provides a new, independent method to constrain the star-formation history and the nature of the first stars (Pop III) during the Epoch of Reionization.
- Future Synergy: The framework sets the stage for similar analyses with other upcoming surveys (e.g., Rubin/LSST, CSST), promising a deeper understanding of galaxy formation, the buildup of stellar mass in halos, and the cosmic history of star formation.
In conclusion, the SPHEREx × Euclid synergy transforms the EBL from a "fuzzy" background into a resolved probe of cosmic structure, offering unprecedented constraints on the diffuse stellar components of the universe.
