Euclid preparation. Non-Gaussianity of 2-pt statistics likelihood: Parameter inference with a non-Gaussian likelihood in Fourier and configuration space
Using 10,000 realistic Euclid mocks, this study demonstrates that despite modeling likelihood skewness via an Edgeworth expansion, the Gaussian likelihood assumption remains robust for Euclid 2-point statistics analyses in both Fourier and configuration space, yielding cosmological constraints with less than 5% variation in the figure of merit.

Imagine you are a detective trying to solve the mystery of the Universe's history. You have a massive collection of clues: the positions of billions of galaxies. To make sense of this data, you need a "rulebook" (a statistical model) to tell you how likely it is that your observations happened by chance or if they reveal a specific truth about the Universe's ingredients (like dark matter and dark energy).
For decades, astronomers have used a very simple, popular rulebook called the Gaussian Likelihood. Think of this like assuming that if you roll a die a million times, the results will form a perfect, smooth bell curve. It's easy to calculate and usually works well.
However, the universe is messy. When you look at the distribution of galaxies, especially on very large scales or in specific survey shapes, the data doesn't always look like a perfect bell curve. It gets "skewed" (lopsided) or "spiky." The first paper in this series (by the same team) discovered that the data actually has these weird, non-Gaussian shapes.
This paper asks a crucial question: Does this messiness matter? If we ignore the weird shapes and keep using the simple "bell curve" rulebook, will we get the wrong answer about the Universe?
Here is the breakdown of their investigation, using some everyday analogies:
1. The Setup: Building a "Mock" Universe
To test their theory, the team didn't just look at real data; they built a virtual universe.
- The Simulator: They used a super-fast computer code called COVMOS to generate 10,000 different versions of the universe.
- The Shapes: They didn't just look at a perfect square box. They cut out different shapes from these virtual universes to mimic the actual Euclid telescope's view: a big sphere, a small sphere, and a long, narrow cone (like looking through a telescope tube).
- The Goal: They wanted to see if the "weirdness" (non-Gaussianity) got worse when they looked at smaller or oddly shaped chunks of the universe.
The Finding: Yes, the weirdness got worse in smaller or oddly shaped chunks. The data became very lopsided.
2. The Solution: The "Edgeworth Expansion"
If the data is lopsided, the simple bell curve rulebook is technically wrong. So, the team tried to write a better rulebook.
- The Analogy: Imagine the bell curve is a flat, smooth sheet of paper. The "Edgeworth expansion" is like adding wrinkles, folds, and bumps to that paper to match the actual shape of the data.
- The Complexity: This new rulebook is complicated. It requires calculating not just the average shape, but also how the data "twists" (skewness) in every possible direction. It's like trying to describe a crumpled piece of paper by measuring every single fold.
3. The Twist: The "Magic Glasses" (Change of Basis)
Calculating all those folds was computationally exhausting. So, the team put on a pair of "Magic Glasses" (a mathematical change of basis).
- What it did: When they looked at the data through these glasses, the complex, messy correlations between different parts of the data disappeared. The "folds" in the paper smoothed out.
- The Surprise: In this new view, the "extra" weirdness (the non-Gaussian features) mostly vanished! The data looked almost perfectly like a standard bell curve again, except for a tiny bit of lopsidedness on the very largest scales.
- The Lesson: It turns out that much of the "weirdness" they saw earlier was just an illusion caused by looking at the data in a messy, correlated way. Once you untangle the data, it's much more "Gaussian" than it seemed.
4. The Verdict: Does the Simple Rulebook Work?
The team ran their detective work (parameter inference) using three different rulebooks:
- The Simple One: The standard Gaussian (bell curve).
- The "Diagonal" One: The Edgeworth expansion, but only fixing the main lopsidedness.
- The "Full" One: The Edgeworth expansion, fixing every single twist and fold (including the messy off-diagonal parts).
The Results:
- Scenario A (The Full One): When they tried to fix every tiny twist and fold, the results actually got worse. Why? Because the computer couldn't measure those tiny folds perfectly; it just added "noise" (static) to the calculation, confusing the detective.
- Scenario B (The Simple vs. The Diagonal): The results from the simple bell curve and the "Diagonal" Edgeworth expansion were almost identical. The difference in their final answers was less than 5%.
5. The Real-World Test: The Euclid Telescope
Finally, they tested this on a simulation that looked exactly like the real Euclid telescope data (which will observe real galaxies, not just dark matter).
- The Shot Noise Factor: Real telescopes have a limit to how many galaxies they can see clearly. This creates "shot noise" (like grain in a photograph).
- The Result: They found that this "graininess" (shot noise) washes out the remaining weirdness. The data from the real Euclid telescope is so "noisy" on small scales that the non-Gaussian features are completely diluted. The data looks very Gaussian.
The Bottom Line
The authors conclude that the simple "bell curve" rulebook is perfectly safe to use.
Even though the universe is messy and the data looks weird in some places, the "weirdness" doesn't actually change the final answer about the Universe's ingredients. Using the complex, fancy rulebook doesn't give you a better answer; it just makes the math harder and adds confusion.
In short: You don't need a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The simple Gaussian assumption is robust, reliable, and ready for the Euclid mission.
1. Problem Statement
Modern cosmological analyses rely heavily on 2-point statistics (Power Spectrum P(k) and 2-Point Correlation Function 2PCF ξ(r)) to constrain cosmological parameters. The standard approach assumes that the likelihood function of these statistics follows a Gaussian distribution.
However, previous work (Euclid Collaboration: Bel et al. 2025, hereafter B-2025) demonstrated that the distribution of power spectrum estimates exhibits significant non-Gaussian features, particularly:
- Large scales: Due to a low number of modes, the distribution is closer to χ2 than Gaussian.
- Intermediate/Small scales: Deviations arise from higher-order N-point statistics of the density field and survey window functions (masks).
- Impact: It was unclear whether these deviations from Gaussianity introduce significant biases in cosmological parameter inference or degrade the Figure of Merit (FoM) for the Euclid mission.
2. Methodology
A. Simulations and Data Generation
- COVMOS Simulations: The authors generated 10,000 realizations of dark matter fields using the COVMOS method. This method generates fast approximate simulations that accurately model the covariance and skewness of 2-point statistics up to k=1.3h/Mpc.
- Geometries: To test the impact of survey masks, four geometries were defined by cutting volumes from a periodic box (L=1Gpc/h):
- BOX: Full periodic box (Reference).
- S500: Sphere, R=0.5Gpc/h.
- S200: Sphere, R=0.2Gpc/h (Smallest volume, highest skewness).
- CONE: Cone with half-aperture θ=15∘.
- Redshifts: Analyses were performed at z=0 and z=0.5 to maximize skewness.
- Euclid Context (ELM): To assess realism, the authors used Euclid Large Mocks (ELM) based on PINOCCHIO simulations (galaxy catalogues with realistic shot noise). They cloned 1,000 ELM realizations into 10,000 using COVMOS to estimate skewness in a realistic survey setting.
B. Estimators and Modeling
- Fourier Space: Power spectra were estimated using NBodyKit. The effect of the survey window function was modeled by convolving the theoretical power spectrum with the window function (using Hankel transforms) and applying Integral Constraint (IC) corrections.
- Configuration Space: A custom estimator for the 2PCF was developed for spherical and conical geometries. Unlike the standard Landy & Szalay estimator which requires massive random catalogues, this method computes cross-correlations analytically using the survey geometry, reducing computational cost by orders of magnitude.
- Forward Modeling: Theoretical models were convolved with window functions to match the simulated data, ensuring no modeling bias affected the inference.
C. Likelihood Modeling (Edgeworth Expansion)
To account for non-Gaussianity, the authors modeled the likelihood using an Edgeworth expansion up to the first order (skewness):
L≈G×[1+H(x,λ,k3)]
where G is the Gaussian likelihood and H involves the skewness tensor k3.
- Change of Basis: To simplify the calculation of the skewness tensor (which involves 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point correlators), the authors performed a linear transformation (similar to Principal Component Analysis) to an uncorrelated basis where the precision matrix is the identity.
- Scenarios Tested:
- Scenario 1: Includes only the diagonal elements of the skewness tensor (1-point correlators, i.e., standard skewness S3).
- Scenario 2: Includes the full skewness tensor (diagonal + off-diagonal 2-point and 3-point correlators).
D. Parameter Inference
Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analyses were performed using MontePython to constrain parameters ωcdm, ωb, and h. The analysis compared three likelihood models:
- Gaussian Likelihood (LG).
- Edgeworth Scenario 1 (LE1).
- Edgeworth Scenario 2 (LE2).
3. Key Contributions
- Basis Transformation Discovery: The paper demonstrates that while the original data basis shows significant off-diagonal skewness (non-Gaussian correlations between modes), transforming to the uncorrelated basis drastically reduces the off-diagonal elements of the skewness tensor to the level of Gaussian noise (σ≈0.01). In this basis, only large-scale 1-point skewness remains significant.
- Efficient 2PCF Estimator: Development of a fast 2PCF estimator for complex geometries (spheres/cones) that avoids the need for random catalogues, enabling the processing of 10,000 realizations.
- Realistic Euclid Assessment: Application of the methodology to realistic galaxy mocks (ELM) to quantify the impact of shot noise on non-Gaussianity.
4. Results
Skewness Behavior:
- In the original basis, skewness is high on small scales and off-diagonal elements are non-zero.
- In the uncorrelated basis, off-diagonal elements vanish (consistent with zero), and the remaining diagonal skewness matches the expectation for a Gaussian field (dominated by large scales).
- Shot Noise Effect: In realistic Euclid-like mocks (ELM), the high level of shot noise expected for the spectroscopic sample dilutes the non-Gaussian features on intermediate scales. The estimated skewness in realistic mocks is consistent with a Gaussian field.
Parameter Inference:
- Scenario 1 vs. Gaussian: Including only the diagonal skewness (Scenario 1) yields constraints virtually identical to the Gaussian likelihood.
- Scenario 2 vs. Gaussian: Including the full tensor (Scenario 2) introduces noise into the inference due to the limited precision of estimating the off-diagonal terms. This results in slight, random shifts in contours and compression of the parameter space, but no systematic bias.
- Figure of Merit (FoM): The ratio of the FoM between the Edgeworth likelihood (Scenario 1) and the Gaussian likelihood is within 5% for all geometries, scales, and statistic types (Power Spectrum and 2PCF).
- Robustness: These results hold regardless of survey volume, geometry, scale cuts (kmax), or the inclusion of BBN priors.
5. Significance and Conclusion
- Validation of Gaussian Assumption: The study concludes that the Gaussian likelihood assumption is robust for Euclid 2-point statistics analyses in both Fourier and configuration space.
- Negligible Bias: The residual non-Gaussianity (even in extreme cases with high skewness) has a negligible effect on recovered cosmological parameters and their uncertainties.
- Practical Implication: This validates the use of the standard Gaussian likelihood in the upcoming Euclid cosmological analyses (implemented in the CLOE code), simplifying the data analysis pipeline without sacrificing accuracy.
- Caveat: The authors note that if parameters specifically sensitive to the largest scales (e.g., primordial non-Gaussianity fNL) were the target, the conclusion might differ slightly, but for standard ΛCDM parameters, the Gaussian approximation is sufficient.
In summary, the paper provides a rigorous statistical justification for continuing to use Gaussian likelihoods in large-scale structure analyses for the Euclid mission, demonstrating that the computational complexity of modeling full non-Gaussian likelihoods is unnecessary for current cosmological goals.
