Euclid preparation. XCII. Controlling angular systematics in the Euclid spectroscopic galaxy sample
This paper outlines a strategy to identify and mitigate angular systematics in the Euclid spectroscopic galaxy survey by constructing a random catalogue based on a detection model, demonstrating that galaxy power spectra and cosmological parameters can be recovered with high accuracy even when the survey's visibility mask is only approximately known.

Imagine the Euclid space telescope as a giant, ultra-sensitive camera floating in space, tasked with taking a panoramic photo of the entire universe. Its goal? To map billions of galaxies to understand the mysterious forces of Dark Energy and Dark Matter that are shaping our cosmos.
However, taking a photo of the universe isn't like snapping a picture of your dog in the park. The "park" is vast, the lighting changes constantly, and the camera lens has some quirks. This paper is essentially a quality control manual for Euclid's "spectroscopic" mode (where it doesn't just take a picture, but analyzes the light of galaxies to figure out how far away they are).
Here is the story of how the team plans to fix the "glitches" in their cosmic photo.
1. The Problem: The "Flickering" Sky
Imagine you are trying to count how many people are in a stadium. But, the stadium lights are flickering. In some sections, the lights are super bright, so you can see everyone clearly. In other sections, the lights are dim, so you only see the people in the front row, and the ones in the back disappear into the shadows.
If you just count the people you see, you'll think the stadium is empty in the dark sections and full in the bright ones. But that's not true! The people are there; you just couldn't see them because of the lights.
In astronomy, this is called an angular systematic.
- The Lights: The "lights" are things like the brightness of the background sky (caused by zodiacal light or dust in our own galaxy) and how long the telescope stares at a specific spot (exposure time).
- The Glitch: Because these factors change across the sky, the telescope might "miss" faint galaxies in some areas and catch them in others. This creates fake patterns in the data that look like galaxies are clumping together when they aren't.
2. The Solution: The "Ghost" Crowd
How do you fix a photo where the lighting is uneven? You can't just turn the lights on (you can't change space). Instead, you need to know exactly where the lights were dim.
The team's solution is to create a Random Catalogue. Think of this as a Ghost Crowd.
- Imagine you have a list of every single person who could be in the stadium, but they are invisible ghosts.
- You run these ghosts through the same "flickering light" simulation as the real people.
- Where the lights were dim, the ghosts also disappear. Where the lights were bright, the ghosts stay visible.
- Now, you compare the Real People (the actual galaxy data) against the Ghost Crowd (the random catalogue).
- If you see a "hole" in the real data where the ghosts are also missing, you know, "Ah, that's just a lighting issue, not a real empty spot." You can mathematically correct for it.
3. The "Detection Model": The Gatekeeper
To make the Ghost Crowd accurate, the team had to build a very smart Gatekeeper (called a detection model).
- This Gatekeeper asks: "If a galaxy has a certain brightness and is in a certain noisy part of the sky, what are the odds the telescope actually sees it?"
- They tested this Gatekeeper using simulations. They found that if they knew the Gatekeeper's rules perfectly, they could fix the data almost perfectly (within 1% error).
- The Catch: In the real world, we don't know the Gatekeeper's rules perfectly. Maybe the "noise" in the camera is slightly different than we thought. The paper tests what happens if the Gatekeeper is slightly "off."
4. The Results: "Big Picture" vs. "Small Details"
The team ran thousands of simulations to see what happens when their Gatekeeper isn't perfect.
- The Good News: Even if the Gatekeeper is a bit confused, the cosmological results (the big answers about Dark Energy) remain very stable. The errors mostly show up on the largest scales (like the size of the whole stadium).
- The Fix: If they ignore the very largest, most fuzzy scales of the data, the results become rock-solid. The "bias" (the error) disappears.
- The Risk: The biggest risk isn't the telescope breaking; it's calibration. If the team gets the "brightness scale" wrong (like saying a candle is as bright as a lightbulb), the Ghost Crowd won't match the Real People, and the correction will fail. But the paper shows that even with a 10% error in calibration, the results are still usable.
5. The "Interlopers" (The Imposters)
There is a second problem: Imposters.
Sometimes, the telescope sees a flash of light and thinks, "That's a galaxy!" but it's actually just a random noise glitch or a different type of star. These are called interlopers.
- The paper treats these like "fake people" in the stadium.
- They have a separate strategy to identify and remove these imposters, ensuring the final count of galaxies is pure.
The Bottom Line
This paper is a stress test for the Euclid mission. It says:
"We know the sky is messy, the lights flicker, and our cameras aren't perfect. But we have built a 'Ghost Crowd' system to map out exactly where the mess is. Even if our map of the mess isn't 100% perfect, we can still measure the universe's secrets with incredible accuracy, as long as we ignore the very fuzziest parts of the picture."
It's a blueprint for turning a noisy, imperfect cosmic photo into a crystal-clear map of the universe's history.
1. Problem Statement
The Euclid space telescope aims to map the large-scale structure of the Universe to constrain dark energy and modified gravity theories. The Euclid Wide Survey (EWS) will cover 14,000 deg², providing slitless spectra for tens of millions of emission-line galaxies (ELGs).
The primary challenge addressed in this paper is the control of angular systematics in the spectroscopic galaxy sample. Unlike ground-based surveys that rely on pre-selected photometric targets, Euclid's slitless spectroscopy is subject to complex selection effects driven by:
- Survey Depth Fluctuations: Variations in exposure time, sky background (zodiacal light, stray light), and detector noise across the sky.
- Milky Way (MW) Extinction: Dust absorption varying with Galactic latitude.
- Detection Probability: The probability of reliably measuring a redshift depends on the Signal-to-Noise (S/N) of emission lines, which is modulated by the above factors.
If uncorrected, these systematics modulate the observed galaxy number density (no), imprinting spurious clustering signals that bias the measurement of the galaxy power spectrum and, consequently, the inferred cosmological parameters. The paper also distinguishes these from redshift errors (interlopers), which are addressed in companion papers.
2. Methodology
The authors propose a forward-modeling strategy using a Random Catalogue to represent the survey's "Visibility Mask."
A. Formalism
The observed galaxy density is modeled as:
no(x)≈[1+δg(x)]×C(f,z,{Ni})
Where δg is the true density contrast, and C is the Marginalised Visibility Mask (MVM). The MVM represents the probability of detecting a galaxy with a correct redshift, marginalized over intrinsic galaxy properties (flux, morphology, metallicity) and dependent on nuisance maps {Ni} (exposure time, noise, extinction).
The observed density contrast δo is defined relative to a random catalogue density nr:
δo=αnrno−αnr
Ideally, if the random catalogue perfectly mimics the MVM, δo=δg.
B. The Detection Model and Random Catalogue Construction
- Detection Model: A sigmoid function relates the S/N of the Hα line to the detection probability Pdet(S). This model is calibrated using the Euclid Deep Survey (EDS), which provides a highly pure and complete sample.
- Random Catalogue Generation: Instead of injecting real sources into images (computationally expensive), the authors use a bypass algorithm (
pypelid) to simulate the detection process.- Galaxies from a deep reference sample (Flagship mock/EDS) are placed at random sky positions.
- The algorithm calculates the local S/N based on the local exposure time, noise, and extinction maps.
- A detection probability is assigned based on the calibrated sigmoid model.
- This creates a dense set of "random" galaxies that trace the survey's selection function.
C. Simulation and Testing Framework
- Mocks: The study uses 50 EuclidLargeMocks (1000 total realizations available), generated using the
pinocchiocode with an HOD model calibrated to the Flagship mock. - Nuisance Maps: Realistic maps for exposure time (tiling pattern), zodiacal light, stray light, and MW extinction (using Planck P13, P15, and SFD maps) were applied to the mocks.
- Power Spectrum Estimation: The Euclid PK code was used to measure the power spectrum multipoles (ℓ=0,2,4).
- Window Function Convolution: The theoretical power spectrum is convolved with a window function derived from the random catalogue to account for the survey geometry and selection effects.
D. Mitigation Scenarios Tested
The authors tested four scenarios:
- Target Measurement: Ideal selection (f≥f0) with no systematics.
- Ideal Mitigation: Data and random catalogues selected with the exact same MVM.
- Realistic Mitigation: Data selected with the true MVM, but the random catalogue selected with a perturbed MVM (simulating calibration errors in detection models, exposure maps, or extinction maps).
- No Mitigation: Data selected with MVM, but random catalogue is uniform (ad-hoc).
3. Key Contributions
- Systematics Classification: A comprehensive classification of systematics along the Euclid pipeline (Appendix B and Table 3), categorizing them into angular, noise interlopers, line interlopers, and radial effects.
- Forward Modeling Approach: Demonstrating that constructing a random catalogue based on a detection model (forward modeling) is superior to post-hoc regression corrections (common in ground-based surveys) for slitless spectroscopy.
- Calibration Strategy: Defining a robust method to calibrate the detection model using the EDS and quantifying the impact of uncertainties in this calibration (e.g., errors in the sigmoid parameters S0 and β).
- Window Function Validation: Proving that convolving the theory model with a window function derived from the random catalogue recovers the true power spectrum to sub-percent accuracy, even in the presence of complex angular systematics.
4. Results
A. Power Spectrum Recovery
- Ideal Mitigation: When the random catalogue perfectly matches the data's selection function, the recovered power spectrum matches the theoretical prediction (convolved with the window) to within sub-percent accuracy across all scales.
- No Mitigation: Without a proper random catalogue, systematics (especially zodiacal light and MW extinction) introduce large-scale biases and spurious peaks (e.g., from the tiling pattern) that render the data unusable for cosmology.
- Realistic Mitigation:
- Exposure/Noise/Extinction Uncertainties: Perturbations in nuisance maps (e.g., using different extinction maps like P15 vs. P13) cause deviations primarily on very large scales (k<0.02h Mpc−1).
- Detection Model Calibration: Errors in the detection model parameters (e.g., ±1σ variations) also affect large scales. However, these errors leave a predictable residual pattern in the density contrast field, which could be used to further calibrate the model.
- Small Scales: Systematics have negligible impact on scales smaller than the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale (k>0.025h Mpc−1).
B. Cosmological Parameter Inference
- Bias Recovery: When fitting cosmological parameters (h,ωc,As,ns) using the EFT and VDG models:
- Ideal Mitigation: Parameters are recovered unbiasedly.
- Realistic Mitigation: Small biases appear in ωc and As if large scales are included. However, excluding scales k<0.025h Mpc−1 removes these biases, recovering parameters consistent with the target sample.
- Bias Parameters: The model successfully marginalizes over differences in galaxy bias caused by different selection functions.
C. Risk Assessment
The most significant risk identified is the calibration of the detection model. A 10% error in the photometric zero-point (affecting the noise map input to the detection model) creates large-scale features, but even a pessimistic 2% error has minimal impact on the final cosmological constraints if large scales are handled carefully.
5. Significance
This paper establishes the standard strategy for Euclid's spectroscopic data analysis. It confirms that:
- Angular systematics can be effectively controlled using a random catalogue generated via a forward-modeling detection approach.
- Cosmological constraints are robust even with imperfect knowledge of the visibility mask, provided that:
- The random catalogue is constructed with high fidelity.
- The analysis either accounts for large-scale window function effects or excludes the most affected large scales (k<0.025h Mpc−1).
- The Euclid Deep Survey (EDS) is critical for calibrating the detection model; the strategy will be fully operational once the EDS reaches full depth (expected for Data Release 2).
The work provides a validated roadmap for the Euclid Collaboration to extract unbiased cosmological parameters from the spectroscopic sample, ensuring that the mission's primary science goals regarding dark energy and modified gravity are met.
